Today’s question: “IF YOU WERE TO ADVISE A YOUNG FEMALE COLLEAGUE ABOUT CAREER PROGRESSION, WHAT 3 THINGS WOULD YOU TELL HER?”

Woman, expertise, advice, mentoring, career progression
Who can help me navigate my way?

Here’s what respondents said…

PLAN: You need to know where you’re heading in order to get there. Your financial strategy. Family and household is a partnership – support each other & take responsibility.

BE: True to your values. Persistent.  Brave. Present an angle that makes people sit up. Ambitious.

BUILD: Your technical & competency skillset.  A network & community within your sphere of work.

DON’T: Play the female card. Forget other functions or organisations when looking for advancement. Get swept along by group talk or worry what others think. Apologise. Become someone you’re not.  Wait to be asked.  Make excuses.  Worry about failures. Undervalue yourself or your experience.

DO: The thing you love. Learn from a good boss.  Get a mentor. Ask questions. Navigate the organisation.   Go on leadership programmes. Present ideas strategically. Hold on to your femaleness. Listen to diverse voices. Apply for roles even if you don’t meet 100% of the criteria. Grab opportunities. Ignore hype about the glass ceiling.  Collaborate. Deliver on your commitments. Men and women are equal – believe it.
